The decision to write the website in different French-Canadian dialects was discussed at length by the ANIM team.
Some of the team members thought it was reductive: Francophones in Canada learn to read and write in French. Do we need to write a text in their dialect for them to understand? These are oral varieties of French, and it is difficult to reproduce them in writing without them becoming caricatures or folklore. Are we not locking people into regionalisms? Can we stop talking about accents and finally look at the content of our messages?
On the other side of the table, several team members disagreed. The Canadian Francophonie is not homogeneous, it is made up of a mosaic of cultures. Each person has their own way of expressing themselves. This website gives us the chance to do what we want and we want is for people to feel at home. To feel at home... You have to speak like at home! Studies on linguistic insecurity have shown that what endangers the language is the fact of criticizing its speakers who do not use colonial French. That's why we believe that vernacular should become the norm.
